Portugal celebrates its Independence Day on December 1st, which marks the country's recognition as an independent nation from Spain in 1640. This day is known as the Restoration of Independence (Restauração da Independência) and is celebrated with parades, patriotic speeches, and the raising of the Portuguese national flag. Portugal also celebrates its National Day on June 10th, which commemorates the death of Luís de Camões, Portugal's greatest poet and author of "Os Lusíadas", an epic poem on Portuguese exploration and discoveries. June 13th is also a national holiday in Portugal, known as St. Anthony's Day, which honors one of the country's patron saints. This day is celebrated with processions, music, and traditional Portuguese cuisine.
